Character Concept Ronin, the man of honor: Moba Design

I will follow a League of Legends design fashion for this character as I it is designed for a MOBA genre game or a similar game genre. + Most of my readers do read the League of Legend related articles (roughly 8000 unique readers yesterday on those articles), making it seems reasonable.
Well the best thing with making it be about League of Legend, is that it eases the communication for me. Now I can say well it would work similar to X or it would removes Y’s ability. Its especially good when using examples, and explaining situations.

Furthermore, if anyone is interested in working as a concept artist etc I know some people who have interested in doing so for Character Design contact me and we can probably work something good out of it.



Ronin: The man of honor.


Quick Overview:

Ronin is a damage dealing off-tank. He has a very enforced crippled play style and he has a negative passive. His Ultimate and overall close combat distance will require the user to build him with survivability in mind.
In a game like Legue of Legends, Ronin will fit as a top or a jungler role.
Ronin has no Mana, and therefore has no mana cost on any abilities.
All abilities deals physical damage.

Medium Difficulty.


Lore:

Ronin has always followed the way of the bushi, Bushido. One day he had take a decision of doing what he felt was right or following the command of his lord. Ronin chose the latter, and lost his honor and name. Ronin had to leave his family, home and even his rightful name and now only call himself a Ronin.
Now Ronin fights zealously in battle to restore his fallen honor and redeem himself.

- Ronin is a Ronin, and is now extremely lawful aligned as he wants to redeem his honor.  I want him to be like this the stoic fighter, with a will to fight as much people as possible to show his skills. This is why his abilities are so focused around fighting to death, he probably has a death wish.

Abilities:

Passive Ability: 武士道 (Bushido)

Ronin deals decreased damage by 50% if he attacks an enemies’ back.

Ronin takes increased damage by 25% if he is hit in the back.

This counts for both normal attacks and abilities (and proc on attacks etc)
Does not count for Damage over time abilities.


-Ronin is a man of Bushido and running from a battle is not his way. Furthermore, he feels disgusted having to strike an enemy from behind. However, he will not go against his lords commands(the summer on this case), meaning he will still attack but a lower resolve he deals less damage.


尊敬すべき切る Honorable Cut (Q):

Ronin next strike is enchanted.

IF Ronin strikes a target from the front/sides

Deals 100/150/200/250/300 + Attack Damage
Heals for 50/70/90/110/130

Cooldown 15/14/13/12/11 Seconds

If Ronin strikes a target from the behind
No damage is applied.
Target is disoriented and turns to face Ronin.
Target loses 10%/15/20/25/30% Attack Damage for 3 Seconds
Target loses 14%/21/28/35/42% Ability Power for 3 seconds

Cooldown 20/18/16/14/12 Seconds

-The idea is that Ronins abilities work differently depending on how he faces his target. As he follows a strict honor code his abilities wont damage the target from behind.
This is because instead of hitting them with the blade of his sword he hits them with the back of it. Causing them to be distorted instead of taking any damage.


居合 Iai (W)

Ronin Draws his sword with lighting speed, slashing trough one opponent.
Ronin flies with such a high speed he will move the same distance it toke to reach the target after slashing the target.


This means if Ronin(R) travels 200 range slashes the Target(T) he will land 200 ranges behind the target in a straight lane.

This ability can be used to target friendly champions/creeps and wards.
The max distance is 500 range meaning Ronin at Maximum can travel 1000 range.

If an enemy is slashed from the front/side
Deals 50/80/110/140/170 Damage + 45% of Attack Damage
Cooldown 40/34/28/21/15 Seconds

If an enemy is slashed from the back
Deals no Damage
Target is stunned for 1.5/1.8/2.1/2.4/2.7 Seconds
Cooldown 45/39/33/26/20 Seconds

-The idea here is that the user actually wants to use this ability when the opponent is running away to stun them instead of damage. However, the Cooldown is shorter on a front slash, meaning if an ally turns to the right side Ronin can quicker move around on the battlefield.
(I don't know if a ward has a back and a front side???)


報復 Retalation (E)

If Ronin is attacked he has a chance to retaliate the attacker.

7%/11/15/19/23% Chance to strike back.


Regardless how Ronin is hit, he will turn to face the opponent, face to face. (Meaning he will lose time if trying to run away)

Ronin’s counter attack does his normal attack + passive item effects.


IF Ronin is hit from behind he will become full of vengeance and counter harder

Ronin’s counter attack does his normal attack + 10%/20/30/40/50% more damage  + passive item effects.
Retaliation from behind is increased with 10% damage per level of the ability.

- This ability is to make it harder for the user to run. On the same time its a very dynamic ability, as Ronin take more damage from behind but the user can still try and utilize the increased damage from retaliation by turning the back to the opponent.
This ability is made with the Ultimate in mind, without having at least 1 point in this the ultimate becomes a lot weaker.



決闘 Duel (R) Ultimate

Ronin single outs one opponent and forces that individual to a duel.

The Duel ends when both characters have performed their number of attacks. So Depending on the attack speed it can last longer/shorter.

During the Duel, no other player/creep/turret etc can attack or use any abilities on the 2 characters participating in the duel. They take no damage from AoE abilities on the ground they fight on and so on.

Range 100

5/7/9 for Ronin and the target opponent character.

Cooldown 120/100/80 Seconds

Ronin’s Retaliation can trigger during the Duel.


-I like this ability, as it forces very hard choices. Do the user attack the Ap carry with this? Do the user attack the AD carry etc. For example while the Ad Carry usually have a low life, he/she will probably deals the most per attack and very well might kill Ronin during the duel. While the Ap for example can have absolute minimum attack speed. This will in a good situation make her/him be unable to help her/his team. But, it will also make Ronin be out of the game for a long time.


Ronin is a character, where the user will have to take a lot of decision when to attack or not. As Ronin performs better when the opponent is actually fighting back he would be a very interesting jungle character.
I designed all abilities to work good for jungle and ganking, the first on as a primary damage source and some sustainability. The third one also helps in the jungle, the second one is to quickly reach the opponent and jump a head of them when they try to run away and stuns them. His ultimate to hold a single alone enemy for a long time.
However, He is really bad to run away with. He can jump a very long range with his Iai to balance this, otherwise he would be sure to get killed any time he has to run away.

Inspiration for the design:

Obviously Samurais following the way of Bushido.

Many honorable fighting anime/manga characters. Mainly this is inspired by Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin, how he fights with the back of the sword was something that I started working with. And then I come up with this back/front side thing.
